This semester I am engaging in an independent research course in Bio Design with Professor Ed Keller as my advisor. The independent study explores topics at the intersections of biology, art, technology and culture. Over the course of the semester we will dive into the realm of Bio Design, which includes (but is not limited to) areas of research such as bio-mimicry, bio-informatics, bio-engineering, bio-architecture, bio-fabrication and bio-computation. Through readings, films, exhibits, interviews with key figures in the Bio Design field, and attendance at Bio Design conferences, the student will develop a set of writings (and/or a project proposal) that reflect upon the implementation of Bio Design in practice and attempts to clearly outline some of the key issues at stake in the next decades of the field.
In this course I will begin to research biological systems and the implications for design. These are some of the topics we will address:
1: Planetary Biology and the Human Microbiome
2: Bio Design
3: Bio-Architecture and Material Ecology
- Building Integrated Architecture
- Synthetic biology and architecture
- Material Technologies
4: Bio Fabrication
- Bio Molecular Self Assembly
- Biologically-augmented 3D printed wearables
- Bio Materials
5: Bio-Computation
- Stochastic Pi Machine
- Programming Biology
- Bio Computation in Design
- BIO CITY MAP OF 11 BILLION
